Compare two guides

Read two explanations side by side and see which parts of vision each one involves. A learning tool, not a way to tell diagnoses apart.

Comparing Retinitis pigmentosa and Cone-rod dystrophy

At a glance

  • Both involve: Visual field, Light and glare, Night vision
  • Only Retinitis pigmentosa: none listed
  • Only Cone-rod dystrophy: Colour
  • Same group: yes, Inherited retinal conditions

Inherited retinal conditions

Retinitis pigmentosa

What the name means

Retinitis pigmentosa, often called RP, affects the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. The cells which help in dim light are usually affected first. The cells used for colour and fine detail can change later.

Parts of vision involved

Changes you may notice

  • Difficulty in dim light and adjusting between bright and dark places.
  • Reduced side vision. Central vision can change later too.

Ask your eye-care team

What do we know about my type of RP, and would genetic testing give my family useful information?

Inherited retinal conditions

Cone-rod dystrophy

What the name means

The cells used for detailed and colour vision are affected first. Later, the cells which help in low light can change too. The starting age and the pace vary widely, even among people with the same type.

Parts of vision involved

Changes you may notice

  • Reduced central clarity, colour difficulties and light sensitivity can appear early.
  • Night vision and peripheral vision can become affected later.

Ask your eye-care team

Which parts of my vision are affected now, and what support would help my daily tasks?
