Little eyes

Your eyes are amazing. Let's have a look.

Your eye

Tap a yellow dot. Or tap a word.

Side view of an eye. Light enters at the left through the cornea and pupil, the lens focuses it, and the retina at the back sends signals along the optic nerve. 123456

Cornea. The clear window at the front. Light comes in here.

The dotted orange lines are light. They bend at the front and meet at the back.

Three eye facts

You have two eyes. They work as a team.

You blink without thinking. Blinking keeps your eyes wet and clean.

Your brain makes the picture. Your eyes send it the light.

Make the room change

A living room with a sofa, a coffee table and a big window

Tap a button. The room changes. Your eyes do not.

Some people see the room like this all the time. Glasses help some people. Being kind helps everyone.

The eye doctor

An eye doctor is called an optometrist. Say it: op-TOM-e-trist. They look at your eyes with a little light. It does not hurt. You might get to wear funny glasses with lenses which click in. Sometimes you get drops which make the room look bright for a while.

Going to the optometrist is free for children.

Glasses are brilliant

Glasses help eyes see clearly. Some friends wear a patch for a while. That helps one eye get stronger. Never laugh at glasses or a patch. They are tools, like a bike helmet.

Quick quiz

  1. Where does light go into your eye?

  2. What does blinking do?

  3. A friend wears glasses. What do you do?

Flip cards

Tap a card to turn it over. Say the answer out loud first.

Tell a grown-up

If your eyes hurt, or things look wobbly or blurry, tell a grown-up you trust. They can help.
